CRESENT FINE FURNITURE

In 1947, our grandfather Charlie Tomkins began manufacturing furniture in the small town of Gallatin, Tennessee.

He believed there was a market for solid wood bedroom and dining furniture made to the highest standards of quality, but offered at a value. Value to “Mr. Charlie” did not mean building cheap furniture or cutting corners. Instead, it meant building high-quality, solid wood furniture, but skipping all the expensive overhead and marketing of his competitors, instead relying on building a reputation by word of mouth. He traveled the country with a sample nightstand in the back of his station wagon, building the Cresent brand the old-fashioned way.

Over 70 years later, many things have changed in the furniture industry. But some things have not–at Cresent when you give us a call (or send us an email), you can still speak to a member of the family that owns and operates Cresent. And we still focus every day on the same goal–making high-quality solid wood bedroom and dining furniture, and offering it at what we think is the best value in the industry.

So that is it–Solid Wood, Solid Value, Solid Family Ownership. Solid. Since 1947.

HEKMAN COMFORTABLE LIVING

It began in 1893 when Edsko Hekman ventured from the Netherlands to Grand Rapids, Michigan hoping to find his life’s work as a furniture maker.

The Panic of 1893 would lead him in a new direction, returning him to his first profession as a baker. Selling cookies door-to-door, Edsko eventually went on to found the Hekman Biscuit Company, which was later to become the Keebler Company.

Edsko’s enchantment with furniture, crafted in the old-world traditions, would later blossom in his three sons John, Jelle and Henry. They would fulfill their father’s dream and open the doors of the Hekman Furniture Company in 1922.

In 1970 the company became a division of Beatrice Foods until 1983 when Hekman was purchased by the Howard Miller Clock Company of Zeeland, Michigan. In 1993, Hekman acquired Woodmark Furniture, an upholstery company founded by Elliot Wood whose discriminating standards were a perfect match to Hekman’s long tradition of excellence. The company now enjoyed a position of strength in its ability to offer its customer superior case goods and the finest in upholstery.

The careful selection of ingredients, the patient hands-on techniques and the exacting presentation… the shared passions of the baker Edsko and his furniture-making sons, remain the hallmarks of the Hekman Furniture Company today.

Now, almost a century old, Hekman is widely recognized as one of America’s premier furniture suppliers.

LORTS

Family owned and operated…

Lorts Manufacturing was founded in 1966 by Andy Lorts who was operating a small independent furniture store in Phoenix. Seeing the success that big box stores like Levitz were having on his business, he realized quickly he needed to diversify. He bought the machinery of a small lamp manufacturer and despite Andy’s lack of experience, he was now a furniture manufacturer. Ironically, Levitz would eventually become the new company’s biggest customer and as Levitz grew, so did Lorts.

The first generation of product was Early American in style and made from alder bought from Northwest Hardwoods in the Pacific Northwest. Lorts still make it’s furniture from alder from Northwest Hardwoods and is their oldest customer.

MACKENZIE DOW FINE FURNITURE

When you purchase a fine quality design from MacKenzie-Dow, you’ll experience a surprisingly timeless blend of Old World heritage and modern-day practicality. That’s because we specialize in the craftsmanship of superb quality 17th and 18th-century European-inspired solid wood furnishings that resonate as well today as they did years ago.

Situated in West Virginia, our local craftsmen and women employ centuries-old woodworking and joinery techniques to construct elegant creations that promise both enduring value and sophisticated style. Working with Wild Black Cherry, a species native to America’s abundant Appalachian forests, we appreciate nature’s blemishes that do not affect the structural integrity of our product. In fact, small splits, knots and other natural “defects” become attributes rather than flaws with the addition of an unparalleled finish that begs to be touched, not to mention used in a home full of life. At MacKenzie-Dow, we don’t make excuses for the ingrained characteristics of solid Appalachian Black Cherry. In fact, we celebrate them with an incomparably soft, hard-planed finish that lets nature do all the talking.

Inspired by the sturdy furnishings common to the 17th and 18th century English pubs and taverns, MacKenzie-Dow’s English Pub Collection offers designs for every room in the home. Casual, yet sophisticated, these authentic, one-of-a-kind pieces employ age-old cabinetmaking techniques such as planking, dovetailing, mortise and tenon, and square peg construction.

STANLEY FURNITURE

Stanley Furniture was founded in 1924 by Thomas B. Stanley, a farmer-turned-industrialist, who later became governor of Virginia. In 1957, as governor, he hosted Queen Elizabeth on what was called the Royal Visit to Virginia, which celebrated the 350th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

Like most manufacturing companies started in the early part of the 20th century, Stanley was founded on humble beginnings as the Industrial Revolution swept through the South and workers moved from farm to factory.

With them, they brought the skills, work ethic and craftsmanship requisite to building a company that places integrity above all else.
